The objective is to detect defective fossil fuel or solid fuel appliances so that they can be repaired or replaced. The function of the standard is not to monitor low levels of CO for health purposes. ( <span class=\"xref\">Annex&nbsp;F<\/span> gives recommendations for units displaying low (warning) CO concentrations). The apparatus may be mains-powered or battery-powered. Such apparatus is intended to warn of an acute level of CO, enabling the occupant to react before being exposed to significant risk.<\/p>\n<p>Additional requirements for apparatus to be used in recreational vehicles and similar premises are specified in <span class=\"std\"> <span class=\"std-ref\">EN&nbsp;50291\u20112<\/span> <\/span>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"non-normative-note\">\n<div class=\"note-label\">\n  NOTE&nbsp;1\n <\/div>\n<p>For caravan holiday homes <span class=\"std\"> <span class=\"std-ref\">EN&nbsp;50291\u20111<\/span> <\/span> applies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This European Standard specifies two types of apparatus, these are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>type&nbsp;A &#8211; to provide a visual and audible alarm and an executive action in the form of a transmittable output signal that can be used to actuate directly or indirectly a ventilation or other ancillary device;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>type&nbsp;B &#8211; to provide a visual and audible alarm only.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"non-normative-note\">\n<div class=\"note-label\">\n  NOTE&nbsp;2\n <\/div>\n<p>Both type&nbsp;A and type&nbsp;B apparatus can be interconnected.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This European Standard excludes apparatus for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>the detection of combustible gases, other than carbon monoxide itself (see <span class=\"std\"> <span class=\"std-ref\">EN&nbsp;50194\u20111<\/span> <\/span>);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>the detection of CO in industrial installations (see <span class=\"std\"> <span class=\"std-ref\">EN&nbsp;45544\u20111<\/span> <\/span>, <span class=\"std\"> <span class=\"std-ref\">EN&nbsp;45544\u20112<\/span> <\/span> and <span class=\"std\"> <span class=\"std-ref\">EN&nbsp;45544\u20113<\/span> <\/span>) or commercial premises;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>CO measurement for smoke and fire detection;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p>CO measurement in carparks
