This Standard covers mechanical, electrical and flammability
\nrequirements for indoor wire and cable
\nintended primarily for use in telecommunication networks or as patch
\ncordage. Depending upon the
\napplication and system requirements, this Standard provides choices
\nfor materials, transmission
\ncharacteristics and flammability ratings. <\/p>\n
The typical cable construction may be unshielded twisted pair, quad,
\nor unpaired thermoplastic
\ninsulated copper conductors (with or without an overall shield)
\ncovered by a thermoplastic jacket. <\/p>\n
Patch cordage is a length of cable intended to be combined with
\nconnectors on one or both ends to
\njoin telecommunication circuit\/links at the cross-connect. <\/p>\n
This Standard covers the minimum performance requirements for the
\nfollowing Categories of cable: <\/p>\n
Category 1: Intended for basic voice communications. <\/p>\n
Category 2: Intended for basic voice, text and low speed data
\ntransmission with transmission
\ncharacteristics specified for frequencies up to 1 MHz. <\/p>\n
For those characteristics where no differentiation is made, the
\nperformance requirements are
\napplicable to all cables. Selection of the applicable category shall
\nbe at the discretion of the
\nuser and shall be designated in the product specification. <\/p>\n
This Standard is arranged in Sections covering specific areas of cable
\nrequirements and may be
\nreferenced as complete Sections or as individual paragraphs. <\/p>\n
