ESDU Struct 00.06.05 gives a graph that allows the distance of the shear centre from the centre-line of the web of a D-section to be readily determined. It plots that distance, non-dimensionalised by the ratio of the enclosed area of the section to its web height, against the ratio of the developed length of the curved wall to the web height. A number of curves are given, each applying to a particular value of the ratio of the thickness of the web to that of the curved wall. The derivation of the data assumes that all direct loads due to bending in the plane of the web are taken by flanges concentrated at the intersections of the flat web and curved wall. The term shear centre is defined in ESDU Struct 00.06.00 which explains that it is a property that depends only on the geometry of the section and is therefore independent of the mode of support of a beam of that cross section.
