This publication covers installation procedures and design considerations for aluminum and aluminum alloy building wire and cable installations in industrial, commercial and residential applications not exceeding 600 volts. Since these installations of conductors and cables are inside these buildings, they are commonly referred to as building wires and cables. Information presented in this publication conforms to the requirements of the NEC, applicable product standards of Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL), and other applicable industry standards.
This publication contains basic information needed by designers, specifiers, installers of electrical wiring systems; and authorities having jurisdiction over electrical installations. Additional, more detailed information required for certain specialized applications is provided by other industry standards and publications. These are referenced in the text and listed in Section 7.0.
This publication covers aluminum alloy building wire and cable types RHH, RHW, RHW-2, THW, THW-2, THHN, THWN, THWN-2, XHHW and XHHW-2; and AC, MC and SE, respectively. Installation procedures and design considerations for other types of aluminum wire and cable are covered in other publications from The Aluminum Association listed in Section 7.0.
