This document sets requirements for bio-based surfactants in terms of properties, limits, application classes and test methods. It lays down the characteristics and details for assessment of bio-based surfactants as to whether they:<\/p>\n

  1. \n

    are fit for purpose in terms of performance related properties;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    comply with the requirements regarding the health, safety and environment which apply to general surfactants;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    are derived from a certain minimum percentage of biomass;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    comply with at least similar sustainability criteria as comparable (non-bio-based) surfactants.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The criteria of the regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) [13<\/span>] also apply to bio-based surfactants.<\/p>\n

    \n NOTE\n <\/div>\n

    EN 16575<\/span><\/span> defines the term \u201c bio-based\u201d as derived from biomass and clarifies that \u201cbio-based\u201d does not imply \u201cbiodegradable\u201d. In addition, \u201cbiodegradable\u201d does not necessarily imply the use of \u201cbio-based\u201d material.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
