This British Standard gives guidance on the maintenance management of facilities by:<\/p>\n

  1. \n

    outlining a process approach to maintenance management at the strategic and tactical levels, with links to operational activities;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    assisting organizations and individuals to formulate strategy and policies for maintenance management;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    assisting those responsible for ensuring that facility assets continue to perform as intended, retaining their asset value at minimum cost;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    highlighting the importance of regular and planned maintenance as a value adding activity;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    highlighting relevant areas of importance with regard to occupational health and safety and information management.<\/p>\n

    \n

    NOTE It might be necessary and economically desirable to carry out maintenance at the same time as improvements, additions or alterations.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    This British Standard applies to most types of building-related facilities, for example, those for health care, education, housing, manufacturing and distribution, commerce, retailing, utilities, communication and transportation.<\/p>\n

    This British Standard does not give guidance on:<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. \n

      the procurement of services for maintenance (see BS 8572);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    2. \n

      how to carry out different types of maintenance;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    3. \n

      any improvements, additions or alterations to a facility that would make it suitable for a purpose other than that for which it was designed;<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    4. \n

      cleaning facilities (see BS 6270\u20113);<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    5. \n
