DIN 1946-6 applies to the natural and mechanical ventilation of dwellings and similarly used groups of rooms (dwelling units) which, according to their intended purpose, are predominantly used for residential purposes, including residential, old people's and nursing homes and similar facilities during the heating period and all year round in cellars in residential buildings. The ventilation concept in clauses 4 to 5 applies to new buildings as well as to existing buildings with ventilation relevant changes. If ventilation for moisture protection is not provided, or if additional requirements (e. g. sound insulation, hygiene, air quality, etc.) have to be taken into account, then suitable ventilation measures are proposed in accordance with clauses 7 to 9. In clauses 6 to 9, the standard places requirements on natural ventilation systems (cross ventilation, shaft ventilation), mechanical ventilation systems and their combinations with regard to compliance with the necessary indoor air quality, in each case with the assurance of moisture protection. This standard does not cover the provision of ventilation for moisture protection via manual window opening. Manual window opening is considered in order to enable unplanned ventilation stages. This standard specifies the requirements for the design, construction and commissioning, operation and maintenance of the necessary ventilation components and devices for free ventilation and for mechanical ventilation systems, each with user-independent ventilation for moisture protection, taking into account aspects of building physics, ventilation technology, hygiene and energy efficiency. The planning recommendations of this standard apply to low-pollutant units of use. Excessive pollution from the building and its surroundings may require additional measures. This standard does not cover the types of air treatment active cooling and active humidification and dehumidification. Standard DIN 18017-3, which is based on "Bauaufsichtlichen Richtlinie über die Lüftung fensterloser Küchen, Bäder und Toilettenräume in Wohnungen", additionally applies for the ventilation of kitchens, bathrooms and WCs without outside windows.
